Weekend Edge: CFB Week 1 Kicks Off, Notre Dame Torches Wisconsin, Dodgers Roll (Sep 5-6, 2026)

Weekend Edge — CFB Week 1 kicks off, Wheeler vs Braves, Glasnow in DC

The sport just changed. Week 1 college football is finally here — a full Saturday slate loaded with Top-25 openers — the NFL kickoff is four days away, and MLB is officially in pennant-race mode. This is the weekend the calendar tilts toward football, and the sharps have been circling a few of these games for months.

Let’s cut to it. Clemson-LSU headlines the CFB Week 1 marquee window Saturday night in Death Valley, where the Tigers opened as double-digit favorites and the number hasn’t moved — a rare feat when a team is laying 10-plus in a top-10 matchup. Meanwhile, on Sunday, Notre Dame gets Wisconsin at Lambeau in a matchup that has “backdoor cover trap” written all over it if you’re not careful about which side of the number you land on.

The MLB slate might be the sneakiest edge of the weekend. Zack Wheeler takes the ball for the Phillies against a Braves club fighting to stay alive in the NL East. Tyler Glasnow heads to DC as a heavy road favorite, and Jacob deGrom faces the Rays in Arlington in one of the most-anticipated pitching matchups of the September slate. Sharps have already moved the Dodgers line, and the projection models are unanimous on where the value sits.

Here’s what we’re playing this weekend — plus the four player props that gave us the strongest edge across the model runs.

The Two Headliners

🏈 THE PLAY — Notre Dame -20.5 vs Wisconsin (Sun, Lambeau)

THE LINE: Notre Dame -20.5 (-110), Total 46.5

WHY: The Irish are the most complete roster in the country outside of the SEC’s top three, and Wisconsin walks into Lambeau with a first-year offensive scheme and an unproven QB room. The line opened at -16.5 and got hammered to -20.5 all week — that’s sharp money doing the talking, not public momentum. Pickswise called it playable to -22.5, and CBS’s SportsLine model has Notre Dame winning 41-10 in the median projection. Neutral-site Green Bay actually helps the Irish (recruiting footprint plus the extra week to prepare vs. Wisconsin’s ugly transfer-portal churn). A 20-point CFB spread in Week 1 is scary — but every reason it should scare you is exactly why the number keeps climbing.

⚾ THE LOCK — Dodgers ML at Nationals (Sat, Glasnow)

THE LINE: Dodgers -165 (Glasnow vs Cavalli), Total 7.5

WHY: This is a chalk play with real teeth. LA is 83-57 with a +148 run differential — the best in baseball — and their staff has held opponents to a .218 average. Tyler Glasnow is pitching to a sub-3.00 ERA with a K/9 in the top decile of MLB starters. Washington’s lineup ranks bottom-5 in wRC+ vs right-handers, and Cade Cavalli is making a spot start with limited ML experience. PrimeSportsbook flagged it as their #1 best bet of the day for a reason. Sometimes the boring pick is the right pick, and -165 for a road ace against a bottom-tier NL East offense is the definition of “just cash the ticket.”

🎯 The Prop Sheet

Four player and team-total props that graded out cleanest across our model runs. All lines sourced to NBC Sports’ Week 1 unit plays.

Ohio State Team Total UNDER 52.5 (-115)

vs Ball State. Ryan Day historically pulls the starters aggressively in blowouts, and the number is inflated by public trust in a 50+ spread. Team totals in these mismatches consistently stay under — the market keeps overpaying for garbage-time points that never come.

Indiana 1H Team Total OVER 27.5 (-130)

vs North Texas. IU’s offense is loaded and Curt Cignetti will throw the full playbook at UNT to send a Big Ten statement. North Texas concedes explosive plays in the first quarter, and Indiana is a -40 favorite for a reason. Cash before halftime, before the second-string reps.

LSU 1Q -2.5 (-128)

vs Clemson. Death Valley at night, opening kickoff of the season, home crowd on 10, and a Clemson offense installing a new scheme. LSU comes out swinging — the first quarter is where the edge lives before Clemson’s coaches can adjust. Sharp play from NBC’s Week 1 board.

Texas Team Total UNDER 45.5 (-145)

vs Texas State. Sarkisian openers have a firm pattern — build early, then bench the starters by early Q3. Even -29.5 favorites don’t cover 45.5 when the second team plays a full quarter and change. The under here is basically a bet on coaching discipline.

👀 What we’re watching next

The NFL Week 1 kickoff Wednesday Sept 9 is right around the corner. Chargers -10.5 vs the Cardinals is the biggest number on the board, and Bucs-Bengals (50.5) is the highest total. CBS’s model is already tagging Jaguars -7.5 vs Browns and Eagles -4.5 vs Commanders as its top Week 1 spread plays. We’ll break down the full Sunday NFL slate in next week’s edition — the pennant races heat up, the CFB rankings shake out, and the NFL calendar officially takes over.

Braves-Phillies is the other weekend must-watch — Zack Wheeler on the mound in a division game with real playoff implications. If ATL steals the series in Philly, the NL East race gets very interesting very fast.
