“Pick of the Day” MLS: Portland Timbers vs Houston Dynamo

Look out, because I think we have an upset or two on our hands tonight. Our “Pick of the Day” is between the Portland Timbers and Houston Dynamo.

And it’s an interesting matchup.

The Portland Timbers are the clear favorite, sitting at 3rd in the west, with two wins and one loss. Meanwhile, the Houston Dynamo are way down at 11th in the west, with two draws and one loss.

Hence, why the Timbers are a clear favorite and are set up for their third win of the season.

There’s a few reasons I just don’t see that happening though, so let’s break it down…

Portland Timbers vs Houston Dynamo

Their records show the Timbers are the clear favorite. And the stats mostly lean that way too, goals against, goal difference, the win column, and so on.

Let’s focus on where the Dynamo have an edge though.

When it comes to goals scored this season, both teams have four. So defense is clearly a problem for the Dynamo. On offense, they have three assists, compared to two for the Timbers – a bit more ball movement.

This just helps balance out the match a bit. But the reason I’m leaning toward the underdog Dynamo’s tonight, is because their record is not as bad as it looks.

The Timbers two wins came against two of the weaker teams in the league, LA Galaxy (last in the west) and Nashville (12 in the east). Their one loss was against Minnesota, one of the best teams.

But Houston Dynamo just tied LAFC (6th ranked in the west) and tied LA Galaxy earlier this year. Their one loss was against Sporting Kansas City, the second best team in the west.

So both teams have one loss, to two very good teams. Outside of that, they have scored the same amount of goals, but the Dynamo has two draws, while Timbers have two wins.

I’ll admit, the Timbers may be the better team, but the Dynamo have a chance tonight to prove they are just as good, and can win in Orlando.

So I’m taking the underdog in this matchup.

FanDuel is paying out +190 for taking the Houston Dynamo to win the match. That means a $100 bet will pay out $190. But if you are looking to profit $100 on every bet, you only need to place a $53 wager.
