The best value early is on the day’s chalkiest starting pitching matchups: Pittsburgh sends Braxton Ashcraft to Washington against Zack Littell (Pirates -169), and Philadelphia is on the road at Kansas City with the Phillies at -155. Both are moneyline favorites priced under -170 with a starter edge and a bullpen edge, which historically converts profitably when you’re not paying a -200+ tax to get there. The Giants at Colorado is the trap — SF at -131 is fine in a normal park, but a Coors total of 12 is a message about how the day’s going to play in the mountains.
The prop board is where holiday slates print. Frankie Montas is drawing an Under 4.5 K prop that hits both the pitch-mix profile (Montas has been leaning fastball/split with lower whiff rates all season) and the matchup script — Pirates and Nats lineups have been chase-avoidant this month. Mookie Betts at +159 for Over 0.5 RBI is essentially plus-money on the top of the Dodgers order producing one run-plating hit — take it. Eugenio Suárez at +152 for Over 0.5 RBI is the same idea in a different park.
One more angle: Anthony Senzatela’s Under 3.5 earned runs at -122 is the sharpest under-priced pitcher prop I see on the board. Senzatela pitches to contact, weak contact runs into Coors gloves, and 3.5 ER is a low enough number that you don’t need dominance — you just need a five-inning outing that isn’t a disaster. That’s a coin-flip Colorado start priced like it’s uphill.
Pittsburgh Pirates ML @ Washington Nationals (-169) — July 4 MLB
THE PLAY: Pirates moneyline on the road at Washington.
THE LINE: Pirates -169 / Nationals +138. Total 10.
WHY: Braxton Ashcraft on the mound against a Nationals lineup that grades bottom-half in run scoring against right-handers. Pittsburgh’s bullpen has been the quiet story of June — top-10 team ERA in relief the last 30 days. -169 is inside the price where straight ML plays on starting-pitching-plus-bullpen edges hit at a profit long-run. Not sexy, but the number is right.
Philadelphia Phillies ML @ Kansas City Royals (-155) — July 4 MLB
THE PLAY: Phillies moneyline on the road at Kansas City.
THE LINE: Phillies -155 / Royals +129. Total 9. Run line: PHI -1.5 (+104) / KC +1.5 (-126).
WHY: The Phillies have the deeper lineup, the better rotation, and one of the more consistent bullpens in the National League. -155 on a road favorite of this quality is a price I take. If you want the sweat, the run line at +104 is a live sprinkle when Philadelphia gets an early lead — but the straight ML is the play.
