Weekend Edge — Memorial Day Weekend: NBA + NHL Conference Finals, Memorial Day MLB Picks (May 24-25)

DSB Memorial Day Weekend Edition

Happy Memorial Day weekend, sharps. Before we get into anything else — pause for the names and the families behind every flag flying this weekend. Now, with that in mind, let’s get to work: we’ve got two Conference Finals games sharing an 8 PM tip-off Sunday night, a Memorial Day MLB slate Monday with the league pausing at 3 PM local for a moment of silence, and a betting board absolutely loaded with edges. Here’s the DSB read.

Weekend Betting Insights

Sunday May 24 is the kind of slate that makes degenerates and disciplined bettors look identical for one night — two Conference Finals games starting at the exact same minute. Thunder at Spurs Game 4 on NBC/Peacock; Avalanche at Golden Knights Game 3 on ESPN. Two screens, one couch, zero excuses. (ESPN NBA odds, ESPN NHL odds.)

The biggest live narrative: Colorado is staring at an 0-2 hole. Teams down 0-3 win the series roughly 5% of the time. The Avs are the better roster in this matchup and they know Game 3 isn’t optional — it’s a referendum on the season. Books are pricing them at ML -148 like a routine favorite spot; the desperation tax should be steeper.

On the hardwood, OKC went into San Antonio and dropped 123 in Game 3 to take a 2-1 series lead. Spurs come home off a 15-point loss and Wembanyama’s Game 3 wasn’t his usual takeover. Both teams hit triples at a much hotter clip than their season baselines in G3. Regression to the mean + WCF Game 4 intensity = the total is the soft side. Defenses lock in this round.

Then Memorial Day Monday — MLB’s full holiday slate with patriotic uniforms and a leaguewide moment of silence at 3 PM local time in any game in progress. (MLB.com.) Day baseball, big crowds, marquee national windows. Plus NHL Eastern Conference Finals Game 3 — Hurricanes at Canadiens, 8 PM ET on TNT.

FEATURED PICK 1 — NBA

Thunder at Spurs — Game 4 UNDER 218.5 (-110)

NBA Conference Finals court

THE PLAY: Game 4 Under 218.5 points.

THE LINE: -110 across most majors. (ESPN line.)

WHY: Game 3 finished 123-108 — combined 231 — but the box score lies. Both clubs took above-average looks from three. Spurs at home off a beatdown will play with pace AND with edge. Pop’s heir gets the defense dialed in for one game. In WCF series at this stage, Game 4 totals historically come in 4-6 points below series average because the trailing team locks down. Take the under.

FEATURED PICK 2 — NHL

Avalanche at Golden Knights — Avs Puck Line -1.5 (+180)

NHL Conference Finals goal crease

THE PLAY: Colorado Avalanche -1.5 puck line (+180).

THE LINE: +180 on the puck line, ML at -148. (ESPN line.)

WHY: Down 0-2, the Avs cannot afford an OT roulette spin tonight. When desperate favorites with elite talent win, they tend to win by multiple — the Avs are 9-3 their last 12 wins by 2+ goals when facing must-win pressure. +180 on a -148 favorite is the value side. MacKinnon, Rantanen, Makar — they’re not playing for one goal tonight.

Player Props — Memorial Day Edition

NBA · WCF G4
Victor Wembanyama
OVER 29.5 Points (-109)

Home WCF game, season on the line for SAS. Wemby’s Game 3 was quiet by his standards; volume bounces back when the matchup demands it.

NHL · WCF G3
Nathan MacKinnon
Anytime Point Scorer

Avs MUST-WIN scenario means MacK is on the ice for every leverage shift. Goal-or-assist hits at ~80%+ for him in must-win games.

MLB · SUN NIGHT
Yoshinobu Yamamoto
OVER 6.5 Strikeouts

Coming off an 8-K start May 18. Cleveland strikes out at a top-10 league rate vs RHP. Dodgers home night start — Yamamoto’s groove.

MLB · MEMORIAL DAY
ESPN National Game
First-5 OVER 4.5

Day baseball + holiday crowds = looser starters, jumpy openings. First-5 overs historically cash at +clip on Memorial Day national windows.

Memorial Day Note

One last thing before you place anything. Memorial Day isn’t about the BBQ, the lake day, or the picks — it’s about the men and women who didn’t come home so the rest of us can enjoy a Sunday with friends and family and a couple of close games. Take a minute. We’ll all be better bettors — and people — for it.

Responsible Gaming: Picks are for entertainment and analysis. Always bet within your means. If gambling is a problem, call 1-800-GAMBLER or visit ncpgambling.org.
